DUPR Rating Sessions

Powered by DUPR, Pickleball’s most accurate global rating system.

Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR) is the most accurate and only global rating system in pickleball. All players, regardless of their age, gender, location, and skill, are rated on the same scale between 2.000-8.000 based on their match results.

DUPR is a modified Elo algorithm that uses a player’s last rating to update their new rating. The algorithm considers the following factors:

1. Match Results:

  • Match Victory - If you win, your rating will go up and if you lose, your rating will go down.

  • Match Score - Winning by a large margin increases your rating more than a narrow victory. For example, an 11-0 win impacts your rating more than an 11- 9 win against the same opponent.

  • Match Expectation - Winning against players rated at or above your level increases your rating more than winning against players rated below you. In short, your rating changes more when the match result is different than the match expectation.

2. Match and Player Characteristics:

  • Match Count - Players with more matches will see less fluctuation in their ratings compared to those with fewer matches.

  • Match Recency - Recent matches impact your rating more than older ones. For instance, a match played today will affect your rating more than one played six months ago.

  • Match Result Type - Ratings are affected differently depending on whether the match was a self-posted recreational game, a club match, or a DUPRentered tournament/league result. Recreational games have the least impact.

Does participating in a DUPR recording session increase my DUPR rating?

Participating in a DUPR recording session does not guarantee an increase in your DUPR rating. Your rating depends on your performance during the games, including the match outcomes and the ratings of your opponents. Performing well against higher-rated players can improve your rating, while losses or subpar performance may result in little to no change or even a decrease in your rating.

Can playing against weaker players guarantee an increase in my DUPR rating?

No, playing against weaker players does not guarantee an increase in your DUPR rating. DUPR calculates ratings based on both your performance and the relative skill levels of your opponents. Beating significantly weaker players may result in minimal or no increase, while a loss to weaker players could lower your rating. To improve your DUPR rating effectively, it's better to perform well against players with similar or higher ratings.

How can I increase the reliability of my DUPR rating?

  • Play More Matches in competitive settings with different opponents to diversify your game history.

  • Ensure all your games, including wins and losses, are recorded in DUPR. Consistently tracking your matches will improve the reliability of your rating.

  • Join DUPR-rated leagues, tournaments, and events. These competitive environments provide high-quality data for reliability.

  • Play Doubles and Singles. This can make your overall rating more representative and reliable.

Does playing against the same opponents repeatedly affect the reliability of my DUPR rating?

Yes, playing against the same opponents repeatedly can limit the reliability of your DUPR rating. DUPR uses the diversity of your opponents to gauge your skill level accurately. To improve reliability, compete against a wide range of players with varying skill levels. This provides the system with richer data for a more accurate rating.
